Poem for International Women’s Day: “Sister”

In honor of International Women’s Day and all of the extraordinary women in my life, here is my poem “Sister,” originally published in Moon Journal.

Sister

Not having had a
sister and now not
likely to ever

do so, I wonder
what was missed. She might
have shared some knowledge,

letting me breathe more
easily in the
company of women.

Or she might have told
me secrets so I’d
better understand

the mysteries. But this
sister I never
had might have just kept

it to herself, and
I would still be the
lost dog, desperately

sniffing air for clues
about how to find
the road back to home.
